The Fritzbox is the standard for many households: plug it in, enter your login credentials, and the network is up and running. For a simple home network, that’s perfectly fine. But as soon as you want more control over your network, you’ll hit its limits relatively quickly.
I’d been using a Fritzbox 7490 up until now. It served its purpose, but had become noticeably slow and simply didn’t offer enough options for my planned expansion of the home network.
So I made the decision: out with the Fritzbox—the modem and firewall will be separated.
The HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 is still a very useful small home server. It works well for TrueNAS, homelab setups, backup targets, or compact storage systems.
A common issue appears when you want to move away from booting TrueNAS from a USB flash drive and instead use a proper small SSD.
The MicroServer Gen8 has an internal SATA connector at the top of the chassis. This port was originally intended for an optical DVD drive. It is commonly called the ODD port and is mechanically very convenient for installing a small 2.5-inch SATA SSD.
A 10 Gigabit network sounds simple on paper: install a suitable network card, connect an SFP+ module or DAC cable, attach it to the switch, install the driver – done.
In practice, however, the weak point is often not the server, the NAS, or the switch. The real problem can be the Windows client.
In my case, the 10 Gigabit link basically worked. The switch was stable, TrueNAS was able to deliver 10 Gbit/s, and the cabling was not the issue. Still, the Windows side showed instability, system freezes, and uncertainty around the network card being used. In the end, the solution was a different card, targeted cooling, and proper temperature monitoring.
Anyone who works with NAS, video editing, or large project files is familiar with the problem: your home network can quickly become a bottleneck. In my case, my PC and TrueNAS were reliably connected at 1 Gbps—but with transfer speeds of around 110 MB/s, things quickly came to a standstill when dealing with large files. Fraudulent payment requests are currently circulating, allegedly from the debt collection service provider EOS. Some of these fake letters are professionally designed, but have features that indicate an attempt at fraud: for example, false judge's names are given or an Italian IBAN is given for the transfer.
EOS itself warns against these e-mails on its website and offers those affected the opportunity to check their authenticity using the claim number. If this 11-digit claim number is missing from the letter, this is another clear indication of attempted fraud.
For example, the OXID store uses the Raleway font from the Google Fonts catalog in the Flow template. This page is reloaded from the USA and the visitor's IP is transmitted to Google.
Now some warning letters are on the way regarding this and we have decided to host the corresponding font locally and make the changed location known to the store.
